About Safer Home For Mom
Our Mission
Safer Home For Mom exists for one reason: to help adult children make their aging parents' homes safer, room by room. Every year, millions of older adults experience falls and accidents in their own homes — the very place that should feel the most secure. We believe that with the right guidance, most of these incidents are preventable. Our mission is to give families a clear, practical starting point so they can take action quickly and confidently, without needing a professional consultation or spending hours sifting through conflicting advice.
Why We Built This
The idea for Safer Home For Mom came from a deeply personal place. Like many people, we watched an aging parent start to struggle with things that used to be effortless — gripping the bathtub edge to stand up, navigating dim hallways at night, or balancing on a step stool to reach a kitchen shelf. The worry was constant, but figuring out what to actually do about it was surprisingly difficult. There are thousands of safety products on the market, but no straightforward way to know which ones matter most for your specific situation. Should you start with grab bars or a medical alert system? Does Mom need a raised toilet seat or a shower bench — or both? What about lighting, rugs, and door locks?
We spent weeks researching, reading clinical guidelines, comparing products, and talking to occupational therapists. By the end, we had a plan that genuinely made a difference. But it struck us that every family goes through this same overwhelming process on their own. We built Safer Home For Mom so that no one else has to start from scratch. The interactive assessment distills everything we learned into a guided walkthrough that takes minutes instead of weeks.
How It Works
The core of Safer Home For Mom is a room-by-room interactive safety assessment. You start by answering a few quick questions about your parent — their mobility level, living situation, and primary concerns. The tool then walks you through each room of the house, highlighting specific hazards that match your parent's profile and recommending products ranked by priority. At the end, you get a printable Custom Safety Plan with a prioritized checklist and estimated cost tiers, so you know exactly what to tackle first and what it might cost.
There is no account to create, no app to download, and no personal data collected. The entire assessment runs in your browser and stays on your device.
Our Approach
We take evidence-based recommendations seriously. Every product suggestion on this site is informed by clinical research on fall prevention, occupational therapy best practices, and real-world reviews from caregivers. We do not accept sponsored placements — no manufacturer can pay to appear higher in our recommendations. When we compare products, we focus on what actually matters: weight capacity, ease of installation, durability, and who each product is best suited for. If a budget option performs just as well as a premium one, we say so. If a product is not worth the money, we leave it out entirely.
Our goal is honesty, not volume. We would rather recommend five products that genuinely help than fifty that pad out a page. Every recommendation includes specific details — weight limits, installation requirements, and trade-offs — so you can make informed decisions rather than relying on marketing claims.
Product Recommendations
When you see product links on Safer Home For Mom, they point to Amazon search results for relevant keywords. These are affiliate links, which means that if you purchase a product through one of our links, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is how we keep the site free and independent — it costs you nothing, and it allows us to continue maintaining and improving the assessment tool, adding new guides, and keeping recommendations up to date.
Affiliate revenue does not influence which products we recommend or how we rank them. Our recommendations are based solely on quality, suitability, and value. We use the same products we suggest and hold every recommendation to the same standard we would apply if we were buying it for our own parents.
